Mrs. Lelia Brown Gary, the beloved wife of Mr. C.W. Gary, passed away at her home in Franklin Saturday, Sept. 14th, in the fifty-fifth year of her life. She had been in feeble health for several weeks, and the faithful ministrations of family and physicians could not avail against the final summons. Mrs. Gary had been since childhood a faithful, consistent and useful member of the Methodist church, and in her home was a beautiful exemplar of the unselfish, self-sacrificing and devoted Christian wife and mother. She was before her marriage, Miss Lelia Brown Haden of Fluvanna county, Va., and besides her grief-stricken husband, leaves four sons and two daughters; Hartwell H. Gary of Birmingham, Ala., C. Bernard Gary of Cave Spring, Ga., Julian and Walker Gary of Franklin; Mrs. G.L.H. Johnson and Mrs. G.T. Stephenson of Franklin. She is also survived by her father, Mr. W.H. Haden of Palmyra, Va.; two brothers, Rev. Thos. H. Haden of Kobe, Japan, a missionary of the M.E. Church South to that country, and Mr. Curtis A. Haden of Crozet, Va.; one sister, Mrs. L.O. Haden of Palmyra, Va. The funeral services were conducted from the Franklin Methodist church Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the presence of a large concourse of friends, and we have seldom seen more profuse and beautiful floral tributes than were sent on this occasion by friends in attestation of the love in which the deceased was held in our town and community. Rev. C.E. Blankenship conducted the exercises, assisted by two former pastors of the church, the venerable Dr. H.E. Johnson of Charlottesville, and Rev. Thos. R. Reeves, President of Blackstone Female Institute. Rev. J.L. McCutcheon of the Baptist church and Rev. C.H. Rowland of the Christian church also participated in the services. Especially touching and consoling were the talks made by Dr. Johnson and Mr. Reeves. The interment followed in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pall bearers being: Active, J.C. Parker, J.J. Bristow, Dr. R.H. Cobb, E.T. FitzGerald, J.R. Knight, W.O. Bristow, Gen. C.C. Vaughan and J.V. Boone; Honorary, Dr. E.A. de Bordenave, P.D. Camp, A.L. Gardner, J.D. Abbitt, G.M. Whitley, J.E. Moyler, Dr. W.H. Arthur and L.R. Jones. The sincere sympathy of our townspeople is extended to the bereaved family and loved ones.
