GRAY Mrs. Martha Gray, the beloved wife of Jos. H. Gray, an honored resident of this community, died at her Thursday, June 29, in her sixty-seventy year. The last five years of her life she had been in ill-health, and while her death was not unexpected, the departure of this good woman into the life Beyond nevertheless came as a great shock to her bereaved husband, children, relatives and friends. Mrs. Gray was Miss Martha Whitehead of this county*, and she and her husband had nearly completed half a century of wedded life. Loyal to her husband, faithful and self-sacrificing to her children, generous among her neighbors, she will be greatly missed from the circle in which she lived. She was a faithful and consistent member of the Franklin M.E. church. She is survived by her husband; by five children, Mrs. W.W. Vaughan of Prescott, Arizona; J.T. Gray of Franklin, Mrs. R.H. Raiford of Norfolk, J.L. Gray and Mrs. L.M. Edwards of Franklin; two brothers W.T. and R.E. Whitehead of Courtland and one sister, Mrs. Jas. Screws, living near here. The funeral services will be held from the Franklin M.E. church this (Friday) afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, conducted by the pastor Rev. R.M. Chandler, the interment following in the family plot in Poplar Spring cemetery. The active pallbearers are S.R. Nicholson, Geo. H. Parker, D.H. Eley, J.B. Gay, R.E.L. (M.Reg. 552, 717), and the family appears there in the 1850 Census (p. 282a).
