Roy Lee Gray, Sr., 51, resident of Franklin and the Franklin community for the past 20 years, died at Raiford Memorial Hospital Thursday, January 26, after suffering a stroke Wednesday night. Mr. Gray, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, was employed by J.R. Ford Asphalt Paving Company of Franklin. He was a member of the Sunbeam Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Willis Davis and Dora Drake Gray of Southampton County and husband of Mrs. Katie Newsoms Gray of Franklin, who survives him. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Joyce Inez and Phyllis Ann Gray, and a son Roy Lee Gray, Jr., all of Franklin; a sister, Mrs. W.G. Cogsdale of Newsoms; five beorthers, Berkley and Ashby Gray of Boykins, Herman Gray of Suffolk, Marvin Gray of Severn, N.C., and Oscar Gray of Franklin, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Saturday in the chapel of the W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home by Rev. Clyde Fields, pastor of the Hunterdale Christian Church. Burial was on Poplar Spring Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Richard E. Carter, Stafford Blythe, Harry Rutledge, J. Richard Lawrence, Caroll Scott, Lawrence Councill, M.D. Blythe and A.E. Drewry.
