Herbert Gary, well-known Franklin resident, died this morning about 6 o’clock at Raiford Hospital where he had been a patient since sustaining a stroke of paralysis about two weeks ago. Mr. Gary was a native of Albemarle County, Virginia, the son of the late Rev. H.H. and Mrs. S.M. Gary, and had made his home in Franklin for 25 years. He was 73 years of age. By nature a kindly and friendly man, he had made many friends here and was liked and esteemed by all who knew him. He was a consistent Christian, living his religion in his straight-forward walk of everyday life, faithful to all human relationships, a loyal member of High Street M.E. Church, and Vice President of the R.M. Chandler Bible Class of its Sunday school. He is survived by one brother, C.W. Gary of Norfolk, formerly of this town; by three nephews, two nieces and a host of friends. Funeral rites will be conducted from High Street M.E. Church Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by the Pastor, the Rev. H.W. Davis, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson and Dr. Elwood W. Jones and burial will follow in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Members of the R.M. Chandler Bible Class will serve as honorary pallbearers, while the active bearers will be: W.T. Pace, George H. Parker, E.K. Brinkley, J.E. Wright, Harry Steinhardt, Roger Beale, Rob Hayes and Dr. J.B. Powell.
