He was an Army veteran of Vietnam and was a service mechanic with Franklin Equipment Sales and Service. Survivors include his wife, Theresa Whitley Griffin; his mother, Gladys Bryant Whalin of Franklin; a daughter, Donna J. Baker and her husband, Joe, of Hobgood, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Tina Spivey of Boykins and Lisa Whitfield and her husband, Melvin, of Suffolk; a stepson, Raymond P. Gay and his wife, Nickie, of Como, N.C.; a sister, Joyce G. Ricks and her husband, Mac, of Pendleton, N.C.; six stepgrandchildren, Brian Gay, Candice Midyette, Bradley Spivey, Sharon Gay, Shannon Gay and Robert Whitfield; a niece, Robin Byrd and her husband, Charles and son Joshua of Murfreesboro; and special aunts. He was predeceased by his father, Johnnie Griffin. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. J.R. Hughes and the Rev. Howard Vinson officiating. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and suggests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Ruth Petty, 116 Southampton Road, Franklin, VA 23851.
