GEORGE W. GRIFFIN. Colonel K.R. Griffin received a telegram Sunday evening announcing the death, at Union City, Tenn., of his brother, the Rev. George W. Griffin. That gentleman was stricken with paralysis on Thursday last and died yesterday afternoon. The deceased was born in Southampton county in 1830, and was educated for the Baptist ministry at Richmond College. His first charge was a circuit of four churches in Southampton and Isle of Wight counties, one of which was at Millford [sic; Millfield]. He was subsequently called to Knoxville, Tenn., where he remained until the beginning of the war, when be joined the Southern army as a chaplain. In this duty he remained until his health gave way and he was obliged to resign, taking charge of a church at Yanceyville, N.C. After the war he returned to Knoxville, where he remained for a number of years. He was for some time president of a Baptist College in Texas, but gave up the position on account of declining health, and has since lived with his son, William H. Griffin, in Union City, at whose residence he died. He leaves a widow and several children. Rev. Dr. George W. Columbia, TN, sn/o William & Virginia [HOLMES], Minister Ella H. Bailey, 21, b. Southampton Co., res. Isle of Wight Co., sn/o Wm.O. & Virginia**, Minister m. 13 Jul 1859, Isle of Wight Co. (IoW.Co. M.Reg. 1859 #25; BVS copy, 1859 p. 90 #24) Ella's obit ("The Commercial," {Union City, TN}, Fri., June 23, 1911) is posted with her Find a Grave Mem. (#169180951), which gives her father wrong. **Rev. William Ormond BAILEY 1m. "Jackey" JARRATT, 24 Dec 1824, in Sussex Co. She d. 23 Oct 1843 in Smithfield, and was buried in a BAILEY family cemetery, in Southampton Co. (source: Ancestry.com Family Trees); site not known (Sep 2019) to the SCHS Cemetery Project. His bros John H. & Kenneth Raynor GRIFFIN both served the Confederacy in the 18th Virginia Heavy Artillery, Co. A - the Southampton Lee Artillery. Kenneth is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth.
