Lawrence A. Griffin today at 11 a. m., at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Portsmouth, for William Suly [sic; Sully] Griffin Jr. The Rev. William D. McGonigle, pastor of St. Jude's Catholic Church, conducted the burial service in Oak Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth. A rosary service was held Monday night at the W.J.M. Holland Funeral Home, Franklin. Mr. Griffin, 55, resident engineer for the Virginia Highway Department, died Saturday night at his home here after several months illness. A 1928 graduate of Virginia Military Institute, his first job was as civil engineer with the Virginian Railway in West Virginia. In 1930 he joined the state highway department and since 1940 had served in its Suffolk district, working as assistant resident engineer in the Norfolk office and resident engineer at Suffolk. In 1953 he became resident engineer here in charge of highways of Southampton and Greenville counties. He was a member of Franklin Rotary Club and of St. Jude's Catholic Church. A son of William S. and Laura Parker Grifin, he was a native of Portsmouth. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Virginia Barrett Griffin; a son, William S. Griffin III, a daughter, Mrs. Emmett F. Reese II, of Courtland; three brothers, the Rev. Lawrence A. Griffin of Buffalo, N.Y., Dr. Joseph P. Griffin of Wilmington, Del., and Kenneth R. Griffin of Portsmouth; a sister, Mrs. John H. Lohman of Portsmouth; nieces and nephews.
