GRISSOM DIES IN LOCAL HOSPITAL ON SUNDAY MORNING Edward Vance Grissom, a prominent farmer of the Courtland-Sebrell community, passed away early Sunday morning, April 25, in Raiford Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was 71 years of age. Mr. Grissom, who was the son of the late Robert Debro and Adeline Castellowe Grissom, born in Vance County, N.C. He moved to Southampton County in 1936 from Hertford County, N.C., where for a number of years he had been actively engaged in farming and the mercantile and lumber businesses. When a young man Mr. Grissom worked for the tobacco markets in both Rocky Mount and Wilson, N.C. In 1903 he went to Bertie and Hertford counties in the interest of the growth of tobacco for the Wilson tobacco market. He was twice married. His first wife, who died in 1914, was Lillie G. Lloyd, daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Wm. Isaac Lloyd of Harrellsville, N.C. To this union were born four children, Mrs. C.C. Baker of Sedley, R.E. Grissom of South Norfolk, Mrs. R.B. Gordon, Rocky Mount, N.C., and Edward Vance Grissom, Jr., deceased. In 1916 Mr. Grissom married Mrs. Beulah Modlin Mitchell, the mother of the late J. Robert Mitchell, stepson of Mr. Grissom. To this latter union were born three children, Vance D. Grissom of Jarratt, and J. Lineberry Grissom and Mrs. James U. Kitchen of Courtland. Mr. Grissom's family has lost a loving and devoted husband and father, and his community has lost a loyal and useful citizen. From early manhood he was known as a promoter of any interest that was for the betterment of humanity. Prior to his coming to Southampton he had served for 21 years as a member of the school board in Hertford County. For a number of years he also served Hertford County as chairman of the board of road commissioners and as a justice of the peace. From the beginning to the Triple-A program he was closely identified with it until his death, serving as county committeeman in both Hertford and Southampton counties. In addition to being a zealous worker in civic activities, Mr. Grissom was a faithful and an untiring worker in his church. For years he received a great joy and blessing from teaching the men's Bible class in Christian Harbor Baptist Church in Hertford County. He also served as deacon of that church as well as deacon of the Courtland Baptist Church. Not only was Mr. Grissom held in high esteem by members of his own race but he was respected by all members of the colored race who came in contact with him, for they found in him a staunch and understanding friend. In addition to his widow and children he is survived by two brothers, Judge J.W. Grissom of Rocky Mounty, N.C., and W.G. Grissom of Henderson, N.C.; one sisters, Mrs. C.S.
