Grizzard who died at his home in Courtland Thursday morning at one o’clock following a brief illness in which Bright’s Disease was attended by other complications. Sheriff Grizzard was one of the most universally popular men in Southampton County; was faithful to duty, fearless in its performance and true to all of the obligations of life. He was first elected to the office of Sheriff in 1915, winning a notable victory, and was re-elected in 1919. Mr. Grizzard was born in the Adams Grove community of this county* and about fifty-five years of age. He was a loyal and consistent communicant of the Methodist faith, holding his membership with Courtland M.E. Church. His first wife was Miss Laura Turner of Adams Grove and from this union there survive six children; John Grizzard of Greensboro, N.C., Thomas Grizzard of Richmond, David and Franklin Grizzard of Courtland; Mrs. P.T. Person of Boykins and Mrs. W.B. Smith of Courtland. His widow to whom he had been married only a few months, was Miss Fannie Bell, the daughter of Mr. W.D. Bell of Courtland. He leaves one brother, J.H. Grizzard of Emporia and Mrs. A.C. Whitehorn of Adams Grove, besides a wide family connection and a host of warm, personal friends. The funeral services were conducted Friday at noon by Rev. J. E. Brooks, pastor of the deceased, assisted by Rev. W.L. Burks, a former pastor of Courtland M.E. Church. Interment was made in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, and there was a large concourse of friends present from all parts of the county to pay their last tribute of esteem to Sheriff Grizzard, and many beautiful floral tributes.
