GRIZZARD Southampton has sustained a great loss in the death of C.P. Grizzard, which occurred at his home near Drewryville, this county, Saturday afternoon, January 22. He was 56 years old and since a severe attack of influenza last year had been suffering with heart trouble and other complications which caused his death. It is no exaggeration to say of him that he was one of our county’s leading and most useful citizens. He was progressive and forward looking in every phase of his life’s activities and was known throughout Virginia as one of the best demonstration agents the State has ever produced. Beginning the farm demonstration work in this county in 1912, he conducted it most successfully for two years and was responsible for the splendid county fairs held in Courtland during his connection with the demonstration work. He served Greensville County in the same capacity for a number of years and was highly esteemed throughout that county as he was in Southampton. In November of last year he was reappointed as demonstration agent for this county, and our people were looking forward with pleasurable anticipations to the benefit of his services again with us. But man proposes while God disposes. Mr. Grizzard was a genuine Christian and was a useful member of the Adams Grove Baptist Church. He was first married to Miss Addie Powell* of this county who died a number of years ago, leaving two sons, Clarence and Duke Grizzard. His second wife, who was Miss Ruth Turner* of the county, survives him with two children, Gordon and Mattie Grizzard. He also leaves two brothers, V. Clem Grizzard of Adams Grove, and Rev. R.W. Grizzard, pastor of the Baptist church at Martinsburg, W. Va. The funeral services were held from his home Monday afternoon of this week, conducted by his pastor, Rev. W.E. Lankford, assisted by Rev. Vernon I’Anson. The burial took place in the family plot on the farm and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends.
