Grizzard of Boykins died at Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, February 3, 1927, in his seventy-first year. Mr. Grizzard was one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Boykins. Indeed he might well be called the father of our town as he had lived here longer, perhaps, than any citizen now residing here. He was for years a successful merchant. Although very unassuming he played an important part in the history of the town. His influence has meant and will continue to mean much especially to the young men. One man who has been quite successful said of him, "I attribute my entire success in life to the start which I received from Mr. Grizzard." Another remarked, "No one will ever know just what his life has meant to me." Thus there passes into the Great Beyond a man who was modest and retiring, but was eminently useful and honored wherever he was known. He was for years superintendent of the Boykins Baptist Sunday school, a life-long deacon of the Baptist Church, a faithful and devout Christian gentleman, upright, honest, and pure in thoughts and speech. He was of a very even temperament, sincere and the same at all times. A consistent member of his church for 46 years, the church as well as the community has sustained a great loss. He was born at Jarratt, Sussex County, February 19, 1856. In 1881 he married Miss Laura Beaton, a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families of Boykins. She, two daughters, Mrs. J.T. Marshall of Atlanta, Ga., and Miss Marjorie Grizzard of Washington, D.C.; one son, Sidney R. Grizzard of Norfolk; five grandchildren, Hinton, Frances and Victoria Grizzard, Virginia Lee and Jack Marshall; one sister, Mrs. J.H. Powell, as well as a large number of family connections, survive him. The funeral was conducted from his late residence at 2:30 Friday afternoon, February 4, by his Pastor, Rev. Frank B. Handley, assisted by Rev. C.H. Williams of the Boykins Methodist Church. The large concourse of friends who came to pay their last sad tribute of respect and the beautiful floral contributions show how truly he was loved and esteemed. As one by one we follow our loved ones and friends to their last low resting place, what comfort there is in believing our Lord has just called them home. One has well said: "There is no death; the stars go down/ To rise upon some fairer shore/ And bright in Heaven’s jeweled crown/ To shine forevermore." He was laid to rest in the Beechwood Cemetery, the body bearers being: A.L. Knight, W.F. McKinstry, W.W. White, Jr., H.G. Coleman, W. Hugh Powell, Lewis Powell, R.F. Marks and H.M. Drewry. The honorary pallbearers were: J.D. Hart, Dr. J.M. Bland, R.S. Bryant, R.H. Powell, W.A. Powell, C.F. Carlton, S.J. Myrick, Judge J.L. McLemore, J.H. Corbitt, Dr. J.A. Grizzard, J.R. Bryant, R.C.
