GRIZZARD IS VICTIM OF HEART ATTACK W.T. Grizzard, 71, retired merchant of Branchville, died Monday afternoon, apparently the victim of heart attack, while he was burning off grass in a garden plot back of his house. A passing Negro saw the flames burning with no one appearing to be watching and went to the fire, finding Mr. Grizzard lying prostrate with his clothes burned off and his body deeply burned. Dr. J.J. Grizzard of Branchville, his nephew, was called and attributed the death to heart attack. Mr. Grizzard had had a similar accident about a year ago, being seen when he fell and carried to safety and revived. His wife, Mrs. Bettie Vick Grizzard, did not know her husband was burning the grass when the attack came. He was found lying on his back with his hands across his chest, as if he had made no struggle against the fire, and this was thought to confirm the fact that he died from heart attack rather than from burns. Besides his wife Mr. Grizzard is survived by a daughter, Miss Elizabeth Grizzard, and two brothers, Percy Grizzard of Winston-Salem, N.C., and J.H. Grizzard of Pope. Services were conducted at the grave in Branchville Cemetery Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rev. F.B. Handley of Boykins and Branchville Baptist churches, his pastor. Music was rendered by the Branchville Baptist Church Choir, and Mrs. H.M. Purviance sang "Hold Thou My Hand." Pallbearers were L.O. Tyler, G.E. Tyler, Richard Vick, William Vick, E.R. Vick and Aubrey Woodard. A large attendance and many beautiful floral tributes attested to the esteem in which Mr. Grizzard was held in Branchville and elsewhere.
