All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ALICE ELIZABETH COBB GARDNER Mrs. Alice Elizabeth Cobb Gardner, 76, a resident of Franklin and widow of the late Alamanda Gardner, died at the home of Mrs. A.S. Johnson Wednesday night of last week, after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Julia Beale and William Cobb of Southampton County. Mrs. Gardner was a consistent member of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church, from which the funeral services were held at 2 o’clock last Friday afternoon by her pastor, Dr. Elwood W. Jones, assisted by the Rev. H.G. Councill, Jr., of Portsmouth. During the services the choir sang "Rock of Ages" and "Abide with Me." The casket was covered with a pall of lilies, white carnations and fern. There were many other floral tributes. Her only son, Shelton Cobb Gardner, died in 1923*, while a law student at the University of Virginia. Surviving are two stepsons, Solomon Gardner of Franklin and Robert Gardner of Smithfield, and Mrs. Janie Boyette of Suffolk; five step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Jesse McClenny, J. Edgar Weede, W.T. Pace, Jr., J. Edward Moyler, Dr. Ashley Cutchin, Leigh Johnson and H.G. and R.C. Councill. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery here.
