GARDNER FRANKLIN, April 8 - George A. Gardner, Sr., 85*, an employee of the town of Franklin for 37 years until his retirement five years ago, died tonight at his home here after an illness of many months. He was the son of the late James Madison and Polly Harcum Gardner, of Southampton County, and a member of the Franklin Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maude M. Gardner, two daughters, Mrs. J.P. Cobb and Mrs. D.C. Cotton, all of Franklin; two sons, C.W. Gardner, of Murfreesboro, N.C.; and Corp. George A. Gardner, Jr. of Camp Lee; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral rites will be conducted at the residence Tuesday at 3 p.m. by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson, with burial in Poplar Spring Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** GEORGE A. GARDNER George A. Gardner, 85 years of age, died Sunday night after an illness of several months duration. For almost 40 years, he had served the Town of Franklin, the most of that period as an able and fearless police officer, and later as an employee at the municipal light plant, until his retirement about five years ago on account of failing health. He was the son of the late James Madison and Mrs. Polly Harcum Gardner of this county, and was twice married, his first wife being Miss Mary Cotton of this community, who died many years ago; there being three children surviving: Mrs. J.P. Cobb and Mrs. D.C. Cotton of this town and Chesley W. Gardner of Murfreesboro, N.C. His second wife, who was before her marriage Miss Maude M. Johnson of this county, survives him with one son, Corporal George A. Gardner, Jr. of the Quartermaster’s Corps. Camp Lee, Va. There are 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mr. Gardner was a good and conscientious citizen, a faithful member of the Franklin Baptist Church so long as his health permitted attendance upon its services. Funeral rites were conducted from his late home here Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by Rev. J.L. Jones, pastor of the Murfreesboro Baptist Church, burial taking place in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The active pallbearers were: Town Manager E.N. Wilkinson, Sergeant R.L. Rhea, Sergeant W.L. Burrows, Policemen Lawless Cobb and Otis M. Blythe and Electric Light Plant Supt. C.H. Dougherty. George A.
