All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOHN WESLEY GARDNER John Wesley Gardner, a prominent and esteemed citizen of the Berlin community, Southampton County, died at his home, the Maples, April 11 after a brief illness, in the 79th year of his life. He was an active and useful member of Millfield Baptist Church which he joined in his early life, and was known throughout his neighborhood as a man of many sterling Christian qualities, upright in his dealings with his fellowmen, faithful and loyal in all of the relations of life. He died in the homestead where he was born and where he had always lived, the last member of a family of four sisters and one brother. Thirty-seven years ago he married Miss Katherine Wills who survives him with three children: Archie R. Gardner of Ivor, Mrs. T.B. Bell of Courtland and Miss Arleen Gardner of Berlin. Funeral services were conducted from his late residence Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock by his pastor, Rev. W.M. Hall of Ivor, and interment was made in the family burial plot on the farm. The body bearers were: N.W. Wills, A.O. Wills, J.D. Wills, Otis M. Joyner, T.B. Bell, G.H. Beale, F.L. Boykins, and Rabey Beale. The honorary bearers were: Dr. E.M. Babb, C.M. Cornwell, J.T. Bulls, C.E. Hines, J.B. Stephenson, W.E. Mayton, Thomas Pulley, T.L. Bain, A.B. Clayton, W.C. Swain, G.W. Gray, H.L. Kitchen, J.P. Raiford, E.V. Stephenson, C.L. Davis, B.F. Boothe, L.H. Babb, W.K. Whitfield, W.C. Rawls, J.W. Bain, R.H. Peters. John Wesley GARDNER, b.
