He was ill at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, for about six months while a student in that institution last session. Medical skill failing to relieve him he was brought home some time ago and was confined to his bed until the end. He endured his long illness and sufferings with Christian patience and fortitude and the whole community had been intensely interested in the young man’s splendid fight for life. Shelly Gardner, as he was popularly known here, graduated from the Franklin High School in 1918 and was a student at the Virginia Military Institute the following year. Going to the University of Virginian he took the law course and would have received his degree in June of this year but for his illness, passing the State Bar examination last year. He was a faithful and consistent member of High Street M.E. Church and was a young man of many fine qualities, unassuming in disposition but possessing more than average ability as a student and being particularly fitted for the practice of the profession which he had chosen for his life’s work. The deceased is survived by his parents; by one sister, Mrs. W. Boyette of Suffolk and by two brothers, S.W. Gardner of Norfolk and R.L. Gardner of Franklin. The funeral services were conducted from his late home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. L.S. Flournoy, assisted by Dr. C.H. Rowland of the Christian Church, interment being made in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The active pallbearers were J. Powell Eley, G.E. Pillow, J.F. Matthews, Kenneth M. Pillow, Edward Gilliam, N.B. Rose, Thomas Holland and Roy Matthews; honorary, J.C. Parker, E. Frank Story, C.W. Darden, Jr., E.L. Beale, J. Edward Moyler, Barclay Pretlow, R.E.L. Watkins, Joe Henry Cutchin, Dr. A.P. Cutchin, Linwood Cobb and Letcher McClenny.
