Ministers were the Rev. James A. Coney of Bethel Friends Meeting and Dr. Ira D. Hudgins of Franklin Baptist Church. Pallbearers were Linwood Ricks, Robert Bryan, Major Robert Beale, Mooreman White, Norman Lankford, Richard Cutchins, Douglas Bryan, Lawrence Councill Jr., and Allan Rodgers. Mrs. Hayes, formerly of Franklin, died Monday morning in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital after an illness of several weeks. A native of Southampton County, she was a retired schoolteacher. She taught in Southampton County and in Washington. She also worked for the government in Washington. She was a daughter of Tarlton Woodson and Mrs. Sarah Council Scott of Southampton County and the widow of Charles H. Hayes. She was a member of Bethel Friends’s Meeting. Surviving are a daughter, Miss Sarah Lavinia Hayes of Richmond, and nieces and nephews. The body was taken to W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home, Franklin. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. James A. Coney of Bethel Friends Meeting and Dr. Ira D. Hudgins of Franklin Baptist Church.
