All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CHARLES HENRY HAYES Charles Henry Hayes, 73, lifelong resident of the Franklin community, died Tuesday afternoon in the office of a specialist in Richmond while there for treatment. Mr. Hayes was for 25 years a deacon of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and served there also as clerk for over ten years. He was a Spanish-American War veteran. He was the son of the late James Timothy and Lavinia Darden Hayes of Isle of Wight County. During his early life he married Miss Cora A. Scott. To this union was born one son, Henley Hayes, now stationed with the United States Army at Jamaica, British West Indies, who survives him. Mrs. Hayes died 10 months after their marriage. Later he married Miss Caroline Scott of this county, and to this union was born one daughter, Miss Lavinia Hayes, both of whom survive. Besides his wife and two children, he is survived by one brother, Capt. W.R. Hayes, of Portsmouth and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 5 o’clock from his residence near Franklin, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. John P. Batkins and the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin Baptist Church. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery here with the following pallbearers. Nelson Gardner, T. Hayes Holland, Jack W. Holland, T.C. Holland, Rudolph Rogers, Floyd Beale, Reggie Lankford and Lawrence Councill. At the home Mrs. F.E. Howell, Mrs. Bene Rawls, Mrs. W.P. Baker, E.K. Brinkley and J. Edgar Weede sang "Abide with Me," accompanied by Hal J. Lyon at the piano.
