Ninth Street, New York City, on Wednesday night, January 11, arrived in Franklin on Saturday and was interred in Poplar Spring Cemetery at three o’clock. Officiating at the rites were Rev. R.D. Stephenson and J. Sidney Cobb. The deceased had been in failing health since early summer. Mr. Hayes was a native of Whaleyville, where he was born November 28, 1902, the son of the late Robert B. and Kate Owens Hayes. He attended the Whaleyville schools and graduated from Washington and Lee University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta and the Virginia Society. After serving as an officer in several wholesale food concerns in the Southwest and engaging in the investment banking business in Richmond, he became associated with the Bankers Trust Company of New York City in 1931. In 1937 he was promoted to assisted secretary in the company’s corporate trust department. Enlisting in the Army Air Force in 1942, he became a member of Squadron "A," New York. He subsequently rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Intelligence Section, and saw overseas service in the Mediterranean theater, receiving the Bronze Star. Upon his return to the bank in 1946 he was promoted to the position of assistant vice president. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Virginia Hutchinson Hayes; two brothers, Robert O. Hayes of Franklin and O. Bryan Hayes of Great Bridge, president of the Richmond Cedar Works; and four sisters, Mrs. C.B. White of Norfolk, Mrs. P.O. Parker of Whaleyville, Mrs. Arthur D. Milteer of Gary, Ind. and Mrs. V.C. Johnson of Bluefield, W.Va. Funeral services for Mr. Hayes were conducted in New York City on Thursday afternoon at four o’clock at the Chapel of the Christ Church (Methodist), 60th Street and Park Avenue, by Rev. Kenneth N. Alexander.
