Funeral services for Oscar Jennings High, Jr., son of Mrs. Leigh Bradshaw High and the late Oscar J. High, Sr., were held Saturday afternoon, September 8, at 3 o’clock in Grace Memorial Church, Sedley, with Rev. Otis L. Gilliam, pastor, officiating. The hymns, "Sometime We’ll Understand" and "Abide With Me," were sung by members of the village church choir. As a duet, "The Old Rugged Cross: was sung by Miss Ethel Fenimore and Mrs. J. D. Owen, with Mrs. B. F. Hancock, Jr., as accompanist. Mr. High was born in Sedley on July 18, 1912, and made his home there until the last three years, during which he resided in the home of Mrs. Ethel B. Galbraith of Bracey, dying suddenly there on September 5. He graduated from Courtland High School with the class of 1930, and later attended the University of Virginia. He served in World War II with the Navy Sea Bees in the Philippine Islands. He was a member of Grace Memorial Methodist Church and of Southampton Masonic Lodge No. 68 at Courtland. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Leigh Bradshaw High of Central Hill; two sisters, Mrs. R. E. Vellines of Charlotte, N.C., and Mrs. J. N. Hale of Courtland; and one brother, Pvt. Hugh V. High, USA, of Camp Campbell, Ky. Active pallbearers were Edwin Bradshaw, A. G. Bradshaw, W. D. Joyner, Jr., C. P. Edwards, Jr., W. B. Hancock and H. S. Hancock, Sr. Friends of the family were honorary bearers. Interment was made in Rosemont Cemetery with Masonic rites. A very large number of relatives and friends attended the service, among those present being former residents of the village and schoolmates of the deceased.
