HAYES DIED IN SLEEP Residents of the Franklin community were shocked to learn this (Thursday) morning of the unexpected death of Robert Owens Hayes, 64, of 209 W. Fourth Avenue. Mr. Hayes, who had a room in the home of Mr. and Mrs. K. Brinkley, was found dead in bed about 8 o'clock. When he failed to turn off his alarm clock, as he customarily did, Mr. and Mrs. Brinkley went to investigate. Their knock on the door receiving no response, Mr. Brinkley entered the room to find Mr. Hayes apparently unconscious. Dr. Henry L. Gardner, county medical examiner in the absence of Dr. T.A. Morgan, was summoned and pronounced Mr. Hayes dead. The deceased was a son of the late R.B. and Kate Owens Hayes of Whaleyville and was educated in the Whaleyville school. As a young man "Bob" Hayes came to Franklin to clerk for Jones-Hayes, his brother, the late George R. Hayes, then being a partner in the firm. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in France with the 316th Infantry, 80th Division, and attaining the rank of sergeant. After the war he was employed for a while by the Baugh Chemical Company as a salesman, and later by Shulman & Company, Norfolk Clothiers. Returning to Franklin, he was again connected with Jones-Hayes until a few years ago, when he resigned to accept a position with Camp Manufacturing Company. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church, the Franklin Lions Club, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. T. Owen Parker of Whaleyville, Mrs. C.B. White of Norfolk, Mrs. V.C. Johnson of Bluefield, W.Va., and Mrs. Arthur D. Milteer of Gary, Ind.; one brother, O. Bryan Hayes of Whaleyville; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Doris Pillow of Franklin. Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel of W.J.M. Holland & Sons on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with Rev. R.D. Stephenson and J.S. Maxey officiating. Interment will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
