Woody Hayes, died Saturday afternoon, July 9, at the residence on High Street after an illness of more than three years due to a broken hip. "Miss Sallie," as she was known to her friends and acquaintances, was one of Franklin’s oldest citizens. She was the daughter of the late Hillary and Cherry Vaughan Cutchin of Isle of Wight County, and a member of the Franklin Baptist Church and of its Woman’s Missionary Society. She bore her suffering with Christian fortitude, most of her last years being spent in a rolling chair. Surviving her are three children, Miss Mabel Lee Hayes, Philip M. Hayes and Raymond C. Hayes, all of Franklin; a granddaughter, Mrs. Clarence Midkiff of Suffolk; a great-grandson, Philip Clinton Midkiff, also of Suffolk; and a nephew, Leonidas Cutchin of Franklin. Funeral services for Mrs. Hayes were conducted from the late residence on Monday morning at 11 o’clock by Rev. Randolph L. Gregory and Rev. R.D. Stephenson. Burial was in the family plot on Poplar Spring Cemetery, the active pallbearers being Franklin Edwards, C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, John C. Parker, J.E. Wright, Roy Edwards, Dr. T.A. Morgan, Dr. P.D.
