Hayes, 83, a former resident of Franklin, died at a Portsmouth hospital Saturday night, December 17, after several years of failing health. Captain Hayes, as he was known to many persons in Franklin and the community, was the son of the late Timothy and Lavinia Darden Hayes of Isle of Wight County and the husband of the late Elizabeth Withy Hayes of Franklin. He was formerly connected with the Albemarle Steam Navigation Company, an organization well-known to the older people here, with freight and passenger boats plying between Franklin, Murfreesboro and Edenton, N.C. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church for many years. He is survived by a son, Dr. George W. Hayes of Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Mrs. Odilon P. Delcambre, also of Portsmouth; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery on Monday afternoon, with Rev. Randolph Gregory and Rev. R.D. Stephenson officiating. The pallbearers were T. Hayes Holland, Thomas C. Holland, Jr., Jack W. Holland, Raymond Hayes, W.T. Pace, Jr., Ernest K. Brinkley, Nelson Gardner and James Edward Gardner.
