BERTHA COUNCILL HATFIELD

   FRANKLIN - A funeral service for Mrs. Bertha Hatfield was conducted 
Thursday at 4 p.m. in W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. C.L. 
Gatling of Black Creek Baptist Church.  Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery.

   Pallbearers were A.W. Bosden, J.T. Pond III, R.B. Simmons, Dwight Holland, 
Clyde Johnson, Russell Owen, H.C. Hatfield and M.C. Hatfield.

   Mrs. Hatfield, 82*, died in her home Tuesday at 1:50 p.m. after a long 
illness.

   A native of Southampton County, she lived here all her life.  She was 
member of Black Creek Baptist Church.

   She was the widow of James Edward Hatfield and a daughter of Joseph and 
Mrs. Virginia Vaughan Councill.

   Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Alta H. Vaughan of Suffolk and Mrs. 
Vaughan H. Bradshaw of Franklin; two sons James Edward Hatfield Jr. and J. 
Alvin Hatfield of Franklin; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
