Funeral services for James Edward Hatfield, Sr., 80, a farmer in the Burdette community, who died Thursday morning, August 22, at his home, were conducted Saturday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of the W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home, Rev. Len B. Allen, pastor of Black Creek Baptist Church, officiated, assisted by Rev. C.C. Crutchfield, pastor of Mt. Carmel Christian Church, and Rev. Joe A. French, pastor of Hunterdale Christian Church. Mt. Hatfield was the husband of Mrs. Bertha Councill Hatfield and the son of the late Carr and Mrs. Margaret Joyner Hatfield of Southampton County. He was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church, where he had served for years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Joseph Alvin Hatfield and James Edward Hatfield, Jr., both of Burdette; two daughters, Mrs. W.W. Vaughan of Franklin and Mrs. Lloyd Bradshaw of Burdette; a stepmother, Mrs. Bertha Rabey of Norfolk; 16 grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; two brothers, M.C. Hatfield, Sr., of Suffolk and Herbert Hatfield of Norfolk; five sisters, Mrs. John Joyner, Sr., of Holland, Mrs. Lonnie Davis and Mrs. Ralph Berry, both of Norfolk, Mrs. Eugene Johnson of Newport News and Mrs. Owen Shifflett of Hagerstown, Md. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Active pallbearers were T.J. Blythe, Mills Faison, Arnold Bowden, Farris Stephens, J.T. Pond, 3rd and Arthur Carr.
