LIVIUS LAFAYETTE HATFIELD

   L.L. Hatfield, prominent resident of Hickory, N.C., and former resident of 
Franklin, died in a Hickory hospital on October 27, following a brief illness.

   He was born in Southampton County, near Black Creek, on April 16, 1876. 
Mr. Hatfield was the son of the late William B. Hatfield and Margaret Worrell 
Hatfield Raiford.  He was educated in the schools of Southampton County, and 
was graduated from Eastman Business School, Purghkeepsie, N.Y.

   He spent seven years in the mercantile business in Franklin, prior to going 
with Carter Webster & Company of Baltimore.  He traveled for the company for 
several years.

   In 1913 Mr. Hatfield and family moved to Hickory, N.C., and 1929 went with 
the Lily Mills of Shelby, N.C., as sales representative for the company, a 
position he held until his final illness.

   On July 25, 1905, Mr. Hatfield was married to the former Miss Lydia Parrish 
of Baltimore, who survives with one daughter, Mrs. Warren Chappell of 
Westport, Conn., and two sons, William Reid Hatfield of Hickory and Weston 
Hatfield, of Winston-Salem, N.C.  Lansing Hatfield, another son, died about a 
year ago.  He is also survived by several grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mary 
Hatfield Beaton of Black Creek; and two half-brothers, Linwood T. Raiford and 
Claude G. Raiford, both of Alexandria.

   Mr. Hatfield’s death removed one of Hickory’s most interested civic leaders 
and one of the church’s most active workers.  He had devoted a lifetime to 
church affairs, and was identified prominently in the South Fork Baptist 
Association.

   After moving to Hickory in 1913, Mr. Hatfield identified himself 
immediately with the First Baptist Church.  He was on the board of deacons 
over a period of years, and moderator of the South Fork Baptist Association 
for 17 years.  As a member of the board of the Biblical Recorder, Mr. Hatfield 
gave untiringly of his time and service.  For many years he taught the 
Fellowship class, composed of a group of young men.  It was from this body 
that the active pallbearers were selected for his funeral.

   Although he had spent half of his life in Hickory, he was loved and will be 
remembered by all of those in this area who knew him.
