HOWELL A wide circle of friends in Franklin was shocked Wednesday by the news of the death of Mr. Alexander Gibson Howell at his home in South Boston, Va., following a brief illness from pneumonia super-induced by Spanish influenza. Mr. Howell was married to Miss Evie Knight, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Knight of this town on April 5, 1917, and during frequent visits here with his wife had made a host of friends among our townspeople. The deceased was a native of Oxford, N.C., the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Howell of that town, and held a responsible position with the American Tobacco Co. in South Boston. The body was brought to Franklin yesterday afternoon for burial, funeral services being conducted from the residence of Mr. J.R. Knight by Rev. J.L. McCutcheon of the Franklin Baptist Church, at 4:30 o'clock, in the presence of a large number of sympathizing friends, interment following in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The pallbearers were: active; W.H. Norfleet, J.J. Bristow, Will Taylor, Irvin Wills, E.L. Story, J.B. Gay, Geo. Parker, E.T. Fitzgerald; honorary, J.P. Gay, Gen. C.C. Vaughan, Dr. W.H. Arthur, Dr. W.E. Snipes, W.T. Pace, E.P. Jones, C.A. Cutchins, Dr. E.A. de Bordenave, R.H.B. Cobb, Burton J. Ray, W.G. Williams, R.A. Pretlow, R.I Beale, A.L. Gardner,Sr., E.S. Eley, J.C. Parker, J.C. Councill, Claude Edwards.
