Howell, well-known Franklin citizen, died at his home in High Street Tuesday afternoon, from a stroke of paralysis sustained about two weeks ago. He was in his 74th year and was born in the South Quay community, Nansemond County, the son of the late Michael and Mrs. Elizabeth Howell, a member of a family of seven boys and four girls. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Pattie Rawls of Isle of Wight County; a daughter, Mrs. J.D. Rawls, and five grandchildren, Misses India, Elizabeth, Evelyn and Linda Rawls of Franklin and Edgar Rawls of Suffolk; one brother, J.R. Howell of Franklin; one sister, Mrs. Odie Rountree of Suffolk, and a large family connected here and in Suffolk and Nansemond County. Mr. Howell lived in the Whaleyville community as a young man and came to this town about 48 years ago, being a partner with his brother here in the firm of J.R. Howell and Company for many years. He had served on the Town Council and for the past several years had been constable here. Joining Great Fork Baptist Church in his youth, he united with the local Baptist Church when he moved to Franklin and was a member of its board of deacons for 30 years or more. He was quite active in the Knight of Pythias, where he had been a member for 42 years, and was a Past Chancellor and District Deputy Grand Chancellor of that order. He was also a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows and Woodmen of the World. Funeral services were conducted from the Franklin Baptist Church yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, with interment in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The burial rites of the Pythian order were held at the grave. The body bearers were: M.E. Lawrence, D.A. Holland, D.R. Butler, J.D. Fowler, Jachin Forbes, Captain W.R. Hayes, Dr. R.H. Cobb and Dr. A.P. Cutchin. The honorary bearers were the deacons of the Franklin Baptist Church; A.L. Gardner, Joe Bynum Gay, Dr. Burton J. Ray, R.E.L. Watkins, J.A. Johnson, N.L. Carr, R.C. Campbell, B.M. Cutchin, D.T. Prince, W.H. Lankford and W.O. Bristow. Isaac Edgar HOWELL, businessman, former Councilman and constable, b.
