He was the husband of Mrs. Margaret Butler Howell and the son of Walter D. and Maggie Elizabeth Lawrence Howell. He was a lifelong resident of Southampton County. He is survived, besides his wife, by a son, James Linwood Howell of Franklin; four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth H. Hutchins, Mrs. Margery H. Battle, Miss Audrey Howell and Miss Jean Howell, of Franklin; two brothers, Floyd W. Howell of Portsmouth and H.R. Howell of Arlington, and three grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. R.E. Brittle, of the Bethlehem Christian Church. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Portsmouth.** Pallbearers were Lonnie Gray, John Howard, Hereford Bryant, Cecil Edwards, Roy Gordon and W.T. Joyner.
