PATTIE HOWELL DIES AT AGE OF 88 AFTER LONG ILLNESS On Tuesday, July 29, the gentle spirit of Mrs. Pattie Rawls Howell, widow of the late Isaac Edgar Howell, slipped away to the Heavenly Abode. The end, which came at "eventide," was a happy release for her after a long illness. Mrs. Howell was born at Carrsville of June 28, 1859, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rawls. She was a devoted and consecrated member of the Franklin Baptist Church, the W.M.U., and the Ellyson-Green Circle. Although a "shut-in" for 48 years, she never lost her love and interest in her Master’s work. It can be truly said of her that her life was an inspiration to all who knew her. Always kind, patient, and considerate of others, she bore her afflictions with a smile. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J.D. Rawls, with whom she made her home; and by five grandchildren, Edgar Rawls, Mrs. J.E. Tatem, and Mrs. Evelyn Hughson, all of Norfolk, Mrs. Pat Kelly of Creeds, and Miss Elizabeth V. Rawls of Franklin. Funeral services were conducted at the home on High Street on Thursday afternoon by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Cradock, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. Randolph Gregory. A large number of friends was present, and the floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. During the services Joel Cook Holland sang "In the Garden." And a quartet composed of Mrs. Frank Howell, Mrs. R.J. Howell, E.K. Brinkley and Joel Cook Holland rendered "Tis Sweet to Trust in Jesus." "Asleep in Jesus" was sung as a duet by Mrs. Frank Howell and Mrs. R.J. Howell. A poem, "Make Me a Child for Just Tonight," was read by Rev. R.D. Stephenson. The pallbearers were Dr. Julian Rawls, George Daughtrey, William Cole, F.E. Howell, Sr., R.J. Howell, John C. Parker, J.H. Boyd, and Harry Steinhardt. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Dr. and Mrs. Julian Rawls, Mr. and Mrs. George Daughtrey, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Rawls, Miss Lillian Rountree, Mrs. J.E. Tatem, and Mrs. Evelyn Hughson of Norfolk; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Kelly of Creeds; Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Howell, Jr., and Mrs. Harry Rhea of Suffolk; Mrs. Julian Daughtrey of Portsmouth; and Mr. and Mrs. William Cole of Newport News. Alice Pattie (RAWLS; Mrs. Isaac E.)
