All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ROLAND SCOTT HILL Roland Scott Hill, 41, well known resident of Courtland, died early Monday morning, July 16, at his home after an illness of several months. Mr. Hill, vice president of the Reliance Fertilizer and Lime Corporation, was husband of Mrs. Selma Berry Hill, and the son of Roland and Mrs. Jennie Scott Hill of Southampton County. He was a member of the Courtland Methodist Church, which he served as a steward and a teacher of the Young People’s Class. He was also a member of the Ruritan Club. A graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, in 1939, he served in the U.S. Army as warrant officer during World War II. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, Susan Berry Hill, and two sons, Roland Scott Hill, Jr., and Christopher Oman Hill, all of Courtland; three sisters, Mrs. J.W. Freeman of Suffolk, Mrs. L.F. Chapman, Jr., of Smithfield, and Mrs. G.V. Yonce of Lawrence, Kans.; two brothers, A. Thomas Hill of Mathews and S. Winfield Hill of Richmond. Funeral services were conducted at the Courtland Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by the pastor, Rev. C. A. McCormick, Jr., assisted by Rev. O. L. Gilliam of Matthews and Rev. J. Sidney Cobb of Windsor. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland. Active pallbearers were J.J. Joyner, Walter Copley, J.B. McLemore, Jr., Terry Gilbert, James U. Kitchen, Hubert Beale, Richard E. Railey and Lawrence A. Clements. Honorary pallbearers were the Board of Stewards and the Young People’s Class of the Courtland Methodist Church and friends of the family.
