Howell, prominent Franklin businessman and veteran of World War I, died at the residence on S. High Street on Monday afternoon, July 6, after several months of ill health. The deceased was the son of the late Jordan W. and Emma Ellenor Howell of Nansemond County. He moved to Franklin in 1919 and was associated in business with the late George W. Wade. For the past several years he had been a fertilizer and peanut broker, with an office over Jones Drug Co.’s store. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church and its Bruner Bible Class. He is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Cobb, to whom he was married 30 years ago; and two brothers, Frank E. Howell of Franklin and Dan Howell of Suffolk. Funeral services were conducted from the residence on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock by Rev. Ira D. Hudgins, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, a former pastor, and Rev. James W. Turner, pastor of High Street Methodist Church. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Active pallbearers were J. Floyd Briggs, Ernest M. Bryant, B.L. Clark, J. Letcher Eley, Henry F. FitzGerald, Edward F. Gilliam, Jack G. Holland and Alfred G. Williams.
