He was the son of Mrs. Geneva Howell and the late W.F. Howell, who preceded him to the grave six weeks ago. He was born near Branchville August 29, 1893, and was in his forty-fifth year. He moved to Franklin with his parents in 1915. Besides his mother the deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Viola Vann Howell and a daughter, Marie Howell; three brothers, W. Herman, J. Edward and Dewey Howell; three sisters, Mrs. W.M. Bradshaw and Mrs. R.C. Councill of Franklin and Mrs. C.R. Waters of Portsmouth. Mr. Howell was afflicted with asthma from early boyhood and sought relief in Wyoming, returning later and being associated with his brothers, Edward and Dewey, in the mercantile business and in farming for the late 12 years. Funeral services were conducted from his late residence Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his pastor, Rev. F.B. Handley of Boykins, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin and Rev. F.P. Davis of Sycamore. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being Jesse McClenny, F.R. Day, H.L. Vaughan, J.H. Stephenson, John Revelle, J.A. Johnson, Fenton Matthews and Hunter Darden. Friends of the family were honorary pallbearers. The floral tributes were beautiful and numerous. Mr. Howell was a member of the Branchville Baptist Church. He was a kind and loving father and a well-beloved citizen. He will be sorely missed not only in the home but in the whole community as well. He was a help-mate indeed to his heart-broken wife. Their union was "Two minds with a single thought, two hearts that beat as one." They lived and worked together for one another and their dear little girl, looking each to the other in the conduct of their household. Thus hand and hand they walked down life’s pathway together, a devoted happy couple until the Grim Reaper appeared, but he was not afraid but ready, and with no time for a farewell, nor even a backward glance to his loved ones, placed his hands in His and journed to "The Home of the Soul." "There he awaits the coming of his loved ones/ In that beautiful land,/ The far-away home of the soul,/ Where no storms ever beat;/ On that glittering strand,/ While the years of Eternity roll."
