Howell of Courtland died at his home, September 25, 1918, in his 54th year, after an illness of many months. He was a useful citizen and a very energetic business man and will be greatly missed by his many friends. He was twice married, first to Miss Annie B. Williams, October 12, 1892; second to Miss Nettie J. Davis in 1908. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. W. A. Howell, five daughters, Mrs. A. E. Briggs, Mrs. P. B. Davis, Misses Louise, Lucye and Annie Howell, one son, Charlie Howell; all children by first wife; two brothers, Arthur Howell of Franklin and Claude S. Howell of Suffolk. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery September 26, at 5 o’clock p.m., burial services conducted by Rev. Mr. Coleman of Suffolk. The pallbearers were: active; G. L. Bryant, E. F. Babb, J. Ben Davis, H. A. Gillette, E. F. Reese, Jr., B. A. Williams, W. J. Sebrell and J. E. Whitfield; honorary, J. N. Sebrell, Jas. E. Gillette, E. Whitfield, E. Frank Story, P. D. Camp, Jno. C. Parker, W. T. Pace, C. C. Vaughan, C. F. Whitfield, L. W. McGrath, W. H. Vincent, A. A. Williams, Ezra W. Davis, T. H. Birdsong, W. N. Thornton, J. H. Kitchen, H. B. McLemore, R. A. Wynns, W. E. Edwards, L. L. Manry, E. F. Reese, Sr., E. L. Marks, W. F Hunter, Zack Yates and C. W. Richardson. Many friends and neighbors were present to pay their last tribute of respect to his memory by their presence and the many beautiful floral tokens which were placed on the grave.
