Holcombe, 71, Dies at Home in County FRANKLIN - Clifton James Holcombe, age 71, years died at his home near Franklin Friday morning. He was the husband of Gabbie Lankford Holcombe and the son of the late James L. and Malinda Joyner Holcombe of Southampton County. He was a retired farmer and a life-long resident of the Franklin community and a member of Nottoway Chapel. Surviving him besides his wife are four daughters, Mrs. Bonnie H. Battle, Mrs. Doris H. Bradshaw, Mrs. Willis H. Barnes of Franklin and Mrs. Dawn H. Wright, Smithfield, Va. Three sons, James Braxton Holcombe and Marvin Andrew Holcombe of Franklin, and C.J. Holcombe, Jr., of Suffolk. Nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One brother, Sam V. Holcombe of Baltimore, Maryland; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Edwards of Franklin, and one half-sister, Mrs. Flora Turner Simone of Franklin. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel at W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Melville Johnson, pastor of Nottoway Chapel, and the Rev. Joe E. French, pastor of the Hunterdale Christian Church. Burial will be made in Family Cemetery near Courtland.
