All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ROSA MARY GAY HOLT Mrs. Rosa Gay Holt Mrs. Rosa Mary Gay Holt, for more than half a century a resident of Franklin, died at 1 o'clock Saturday morning, December 1, at the residence in Chattanooga, Tenn., of her son, Douglas Leigh Holt, with whom she made her home. She had been suffering with a heart condition for over two years, and was taken suddenly worse on Friday night about 11 o'clock. Mrs. Holt was a daughter of the late Littleton A. and Rosa Bryant Gay of Franklin. A sister of the late Joe Bynum Gay, former Mayor of Franklin, she was born at "Rosedale Plantation," near Franklin, on December 31, 1878. After attending the Franklin Female Seminary, from which she graduated in 1898, she taught school for a few years in Isle of Wight County and in Franklin when the public school was in a two-room building on Norfleet Street. On November 8, 1905, she married Benjamin Leigh Holt of Franklin, who preceded her to the grave on July 3, 1938. She was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church. Surviving her besides her son are two grandchildren; two nieces, Mrs. S. F. Winiker and Miss Antoinette Parker of Danville, whom she helped rear after the death of their mother in 1909; a nephew, Joe Bynum Gay, Jr., of Franklin; two great-nephews, and a great-niece; and her aunt, Mrs. J.A. Jackson of Franklin. Last rites for Mrs. Holt, who numbered a host of friends here, were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in the Franklin Baptist Church by the pastor, Rev. Ira D. Hudgins, assisted by Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner of Henderson, N.C. Interment was in the family plot in Popular Springs Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family. The active pallbearers were Everett R. Bryant, Joe Gay Bryant, Carlton L. Cutchin, J.J. Finley, Jr., J.B. Gay, Jr., Edgar Jackson, G. Hinson Parker and S.F. Winiker. Rosa Mary (GAY; Mrs. Benjamin L.)
