Mr. Holland was a native of Nansemond county, the son of the late Henry and Mrs. Nancy Holland of Holland, and is survived by his wife, who was before her marriage Miss Josie Saunders of Isle of Wight; by two daughters, Mrs. Geo. W. Hayes of Portsmouth, and Mrs. W.T. Pace, Jr., of Franklin, and by one grandchild, Clyde Holland Hayes of Portsmouth; by three brothers, S.W. Holland of Holland, J.H. Holland of Franklin and R.E.L. Holland of Nansemond; by five sisters, Mrs. J.H. Lee of Winton, N.C., Mrs. Charles Byrd and Mrs. Joe Gardner of Holland, Mrs. Charles Eure of Rudoco, N.C., and P.O. Duck of South Quay. Mr. Holland came to Franklin 47 years ago and clerked for the late I.W. Norfleet for about four years, then going in the general mercantile business himself which he conducted for 43 years, being one of the oldest merchants in our town in point of the establishment of his business. Joining South Quay Baptist Church when a boy, he united with the Franklin Baptist Church upon moving here where he had remained a consistent and loyal member. Few men in our town had more friends than he. Quiet, unostentatious, devoted to the interests of his home, his church and his business, he had lived a worthwhile and useful life, winning the good will and respect of the townspeople, and the love of a large number of friends. Funeral services were conducted from the home Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock where hundreds of friends had gathered. His Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, conducted the funeral rites and interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the body bearers being: J.C. Eley, R.I. Beale, F.C. Eley, C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, Ryland Camp, Geo. H. Parker, W.J. Cross and E.K. Brinkley. The honorary bearers were the deacons of the Franklin Baptist Church and a large number of friends from the town and community.
