Holland of this town died in Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, Monday from the effects of injuries sustained the previous day. Mr. Holland was a dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Cutchin Sunday and was in a new room being built at the Cutchin’s home when a loose plank laid on the sleepers threw him to the cellar beneath. As Mr. Holland fell his side struck the sharp edge of a sleeper breaking three ribs, one of which punctured his lung causing his death. Mr. Holland was an esteemed citizen of Franklin, 63 years of age, and besides his wife is surviving by a daughter, Mrs. Eva Beaton; an adopted son, Robert Fields; a brother, W.J.M. Holland of Franklin, and a large family connection. He was a native of Nansemond County, the son of the late Joseph G. and Mrs. Martha Howell Holland, and had been a resident of this town for about nine years. Funeral rites were held from the Holland Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock conducted by Rev. W.H. Corbitt of South Quay Baptist Church where Mr. Holland had been a consistent member for many years, assisted by Rev. L.F. Paulette of Smithfield and Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin. Burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery here, the pallbearers being: John A. Rawls, Percy Vaughan, Charlie Daughtrey, Jasper Daughter, W.T. Pace, P.O. Duck, P.A. Jones and F.R. Day.
