HOLLAND PASSES HERE AT AGE OF 72 Joseph Henry Holland, a resident of Franklin for many years, died at his home on Fourth Avenue last Friday night. Mr. Holland was 72 years old. He was engaged in the funeral directing and furniture business here when younger, but had retired from business many years ago. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Addie Channel Holland; a son, Joseph Benjamin Holland, prominent on the New York stage; two brothers, Sol W. Holland and R.E.L. Holland of Holland; five sisters, Mrs. J.H. Lee of Winton, N.C.; Mrs. C.E. Eure of Roduco, N.C.; Mrs. Kate Gardner and Mrs. Emma Byrd of Holland and Mrs. P.O. Duck of the South Quay community, besides a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Holland was a faithful member of the Franklin Baptist Church and of its Bruner Bible Class, and was practically always present for every church service until he suffered a paralytic attack last spring. Services were conducted from the home Monday morning at 11 o’clock by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson, his pastor. "No Night There" was sung by Mrs. John Carr, Mrs. R.J. Howell, Mrs. Lloyd A. Darden, Misses Marie Morgan and Jeanette Parker and E.K. Brinkley, Paul Nachlas, Joe Gay Bryant and Percy Bunch, all members of the Franklin Baptist Church choir, J. Edgar Weede accompanying. Rev. Mr. Stephenson read from the 23rd Psalm and used First Corinthians 15:49 as a basis for his remarks; "And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly." After reading a poem he offered prayer and the choir sang "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me." Interment was made Poplar Spring Cemetery, where Mr. Stephenson read Tennyson’s "Crossing the Bar" before committing the body to the grave. Pallbearers were P.O. Duck, Jr. of Sedley, Ernest Byrd, Edward Felton and Lloyd Gardner of Holland, Jack G. Holland of Franklin and Gordon Eure of Roduco, all nephews of the deceased: Warren Channel of Portsmouth, nephew, and L. Rodger Edwards of Franklin, cousin of Mrs. Holland. Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family and member of the Bruner Class.
