Holland, aged 67. Thus passed "across the river" another of the thinning racks of Confederate Veterans. "Year by year - sometimes ‘tis one with flugging steps worn with life’s touch who falls by the wayside - sometimes ’tis one who despite the weight." As 1st Sgt of his Co. (A, 13th Va. Cavalry) his relation was necessary so intimate with those in command of his company that his conduct was always within the knowledge of his superior officers and until wounded at Ashland June 1st, 1864, in consequence of which he lost a leg, was discharged from active military service there was no service which he had not cheerful met. As a soldier so also as a citizen he net all his obligations as such with earnestness and zeal, always remembering that he owed the highest reverence to his God. His life was such that the magic finger of the hand of death but changed this life to the higher side of immortality and while the affectionate ties of family relationship and the intimacies of congenial friendship brightened the pathway of gathering years, they were all enjoyed within the scope and limitation of his obligations to that life which to be rewarded with the association of the perfected life of eternity, must be in harmony with the commands of the Teacher, whose life and death was a pattern and symbol for our guide. The burial services were held at the family burying grounds Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock being conducted by the Rev. F.A. Fetter of the Episcopal Church. The active pallbearers were Messrs P.D. Camp, A.L. Gardner, J.L. Gillett, J.B. Vaughan, T.W. Cobb, R. Henry Cobb, R.E.L. Watkins and Tom Smith. The honorary pallbearers were fifteen Confederate Veterans who gathered sorrowfully behind their honored comrade who was preceding them "across the river". The flower were beautiful and of great profusion. Mr. Holland leaves a wife, two sons and two daughters to mourn his memory.
