All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ PENELOPE HALL HOLLAND Miss Penelope Hall Holland, 77, a long time resident of Franklin, died at 2:30 o’clock Saturday morning, January 7, at a Virginia Beach nursing home. She had been in failing health for several months, following a stroke, but her death was due to pneumonia. "Miss Penny," as she was known to her friends, was a native of Nansemond county, the daughter of the late J. Thomas and Louisa Vaughan Holland. She held her church membership in the South Quay Baptist Church. For some years she was associated in the millinery business here with her sister, the late Miss Lelia Holland. "Miss Penny" was devoted to her family, especially to her nieces and nephews, by whom she is survived. Survivors include a niece, Mrs. Louise S. Thomas of College Park, Md.; three nephews, John Thomas Seal of Richmond, James Seal of Goldsboro, N.C., and Charles V. Seal of New York City; six great-nieces, Mrs. J. Willard Beale, Jr., of Franklin, Miss Marguerite Thomas of Washington, D.C., and Misses Matilda, Penelope, Sarah and Susan Thomas of College Park, Md.; and four great-nephews, John Thomas of Franklin, James Thomas of Washington, D.C., Clinton E. Thomas, Jr., of Greenbelt, Md., and Charles H. Thomas, AUS, stationed at Tokyo, Japan. Funeral services for Miss Holland were conducted at the Holland Funeral Home of Sunday afternoon at three o’clock by Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by Rev. J.C. Lanning of Black Creek. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the active pallbearers being Harry Steinhardt, George H. Parker, Sr., C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, W.T. Pace, Jr., J. Edward Moyler, G.E. Pillow, Carl Steinhardt and Clarence Spencer.
