Rawls, of Franklin, and of Mr. M.W. Holland, of the county, was killed by lightning about 3 o'clock on Thursday evening, May 3, 1900. She was visiting at the home of her niece, Mrs. John R. Dillon, on South Street and seeing a storm approaching, she went out in the back yard to get up some young chickens. To protect herself from the rain she carried an umbrella raised over her head. Lightning struck a tree a few feet distant, and after passing down the body to within ten or twelve feet of the earth, left the tree and struck the umbrella in the lady's hand, then striking her on the forehead, slightly burning the hair and breaking the skin, and killing her instantly. One of the shoes she wore was torn open by the stroke. Miss Holland was immediately picked up by members of the family, carried into the house, and Dr. Goodman hurriedly summoned, but he found life extinct. The funeral took place Saturday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. C.W. Robinson, of Martin County, N.C. and the remains were interred in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the following gentlemen being pallbearers; W.H. Jenkins, J.A. Edwards, I.E. Howell, R.S. Fagan, Henry Cobb, and Dr. W.H.L. Goodman.
