Holland of South Quay died at her ancestral home on Friday, September 11 in the 77th year of her age. Mrs. Holland was the daughter of Capt. Jonas Lawrence and his wife, Virginia Lee, both of Nansemond County. She was married to Eugene Holland of Franklin in 1888 and for a number of years resided in that town, where she was well known and much beloved. After the death of her husband she returned to South Quay where she spent the remainder of her life, save for four years when she served as matron of Elon College, N.C. Her whole life was one of service to her family and friends and to the Franklin Christian Church of which she was a most faithful and devoted member. Her great love for humanity, her strong convictions of right and wrong, and her devotion to duty above all things made her a woman of marked character and one who will be long remembered by her family and her host of friends. It can be well said of her that she now rests from her labors and her works do follow her. She leaves a son, Lawrence E. Holland and a daughter, Mrs. W.A. Jones, and the following nephews and niece whom she reared; William J. Jones, Jack J. Jones, James E. Jones and Jennie Lee Jones; two grandsons, Eugene Emmett Holland and Philip Parker Holland; two brothers, J.E. Lawrence of Franklin and A.R. Lawrence of Washington, besides a large number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon at 3:30 by Dr. Elwood W. Jones, assisted by Rev. W.L. Lumpkin and R.D. Stephenson. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, pallbearers being the deacons of the Christian Church, J.A. Williams, E. Philip Jones, L.R. Jones, W.H. Jones, L.B. Norfleet, Ernest L. Beale, J.L. Eley and W.H. Jones of A. - Communicated. Sarah "Sallie" Eliza (LAWRENCE; Mrs. Eugene E.)
