HINES One of the most distressing accidents ever occurring in Franklin resulted in the death of Roland E. Hines, who was seriously injured at the Pretlow Peanut factory here Monday morning about 7 o’clock, his death following in Suffolk at the Lakeview hospital Monday afternoon. Mr. Hines was foreman of the factory and while standing on a step-ladder applying dressing to a belt, it is supposed that a four-in-hand tie which he was wearing, in some way became entangled in a pulley, and he was whirled over the pulley and thrown to the floor. His face, head and back were injured and he died from hemorrhages of the brain. His body was brought to Franklin Tuesday morning and the funeral services were held from the Franklin Baptist church Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock by the pastor, Rev. J.L. McCutcheon, assisted by Dr. C.H. Rowland of the Christian church. The church was crowded with sorrowing friends of the deceased and the floral tributes were beautiful. The active pallbearers were: J.J. Bristow, Geo. O. Watkins, W.H. Lankford, W.A. Daughtrey, J.P. King, C.E. Bunn. Honorary pallbearers, R.A. Pretlow, W.C. Watson, W.M. Weede, E.P. Jones, B.L. Holt, A.L. Gardner, B.M. Cutchin, J.B. Gay, M.H. Moore, R.H. Peters, R.E.L. Watkins, Wm. Dillon, Henry Duck, Dr. J.C. Rawls. The interment was made in Poplar Spring cemetery, the burial services being in charge of the Odd Fellows. Mr. Hines was also a member of the Woodmen. Roland Hines came to Franklin from Gates County, N.C., about 12 years ago and, with the exception of several months spent in Suffolk, he had lived here since that time. He was a young man who held the respect and esteem of the entire community. Unobtrusive and unassuming in manner, he was thoughtful and considerate of the welfare of others, a true Christian and a good citizen. He was a kind and loyal husband and father; was a useful member of the Franklin Baptist church and faithful to every trust imposed upon him in his church, his lodge and his work. His employer, Mr. R.A. Pretlow, manager of the Pretlow Peanut Company, was greatly distressed by the accident, and besides appreciating his services as foreman of the factory, held him in the highest esteem and confidence as a man. He was in his 34th year, and besides his wife, who was Miss Eva Darden of Franklin, and their little 3 year old girl, Theodosia, he is survived by his father, I.A. Hines, of Gates County, N.C.; two brothers, J.E. Hines, of Suffolk; and A.H. Hines, of Franklin; five sisters, Mrs. W.F. Howell and Mrs. A.C. Powell of Whaleyville, Va.; Misses Annie B., Joyce and Lucille Hines of Gates County.
