All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ANDREW JACKSON HANCOCK Death of Andrew Jackson Hancock Andrew Jackson Hancock died suddenly at his home in the Sedley community last Wednesday, August 24. Mr. Hancock was born in Northampton County, N.C. September 10, 1856, the son of the late Irving Thomas and Emma Davis Hancock. His early boyhood was spent in Mississippi, where his parents moved from North Carolina in his infancy. At the age of ten they moved to this county, where he resided until his death except for about twelve years which were spent in Portsmouth. On August 22, 1905, he was married to Miss Mary L. Whitfield, also of this county, who survives him. To this union were born two sons, H.S. Hancock of Sedley and Dr. H.J. Hancock of Richmond. Besides his widow and two sons, he is survived by two brothers, B.F. Hancock of Sedley and I.T. Hancock of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., one granddaughter, Jean Hancock of Sedley, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was a faithful and consecrated member of Johnson’s Grove Christian Church and an affiliate of the Pythian fraternity, being a charter member of Seaside Lodge, Portsmouth. Burial took place last Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the old homestead, the services being conducted by Dr. Elwood Jones, his pastor. Pallbearers were the following of his nephews: H.W. Williams, I.N. Williams, B.F. Hancock, Jr., R.W. Hancock, E.T. Hancock, R.L. Hancock, M.T. Hancock and Elmer Hancock. Honorary pallbearers were member of the Pythian organization. A large number of friends and relatives from a distance attended the service.
