HARCUM Mrs. Addie Vaughan Harcum, widow of the late W.T. Harcum, died at her home in the Sycamore community Saturday night after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Harcum, who was 76 years of age, was a native of this community, the daughter of the late Hillory and Mrs. Margaret Willis Vaughan*, and was highly loved and esteemed by her neighbors and a large circle of friends for her many fine qualities of generous neighborliness and her sterling Christian character. She was one of the oldest members of Sycamore Baptist Church, as well as one of its most useful and faithful communicants, never neglecting its services or the consistent practice of her religion. Funeral services were held from that church Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock by her pastor, the Rev. John Isa, assisted by two former pastors, the Rev. Floyd P. Davis of Pasquotank county, NC and the Rev. Kenneth E. Burke of Norfolk. There was a large attendance of sorrowing friends, and many lovely flowers, the casket being covered with a pall of fern, lilies and red roses. The church choir, assisted by several choir members from Franklin, sang "Rock of Ages" and "I’m Bound for the Promised Land", while a quartette, composed of Mrs. Hubert Cogg, Mrs. Rosalie Britt, Ernest K. Brinkley and Percy Bunch sang "We Are Going Down the Valley". Burial was made in the church yard cemetery by the side of her husband who died November 1, 1938. The active pallbearers were: J.R. Boyette, J.L. Vaughan, Jesse Harcum, B.D Darden, J. Tom Vaughan, Rowland Vaughan, John W. Darden and Hudson R. Lankford. Mrs. Harcum is survived by six sons, Elmo Harcum of Norfolk, W. Emory, Otto, and J.B. Harcum of Franklin, H.W. Harcum of Virginia Beach and the Rev. Fred Harcum of Wise, Va.; by two daughters, Mrs. R.L. Boone of Portsmouth and Mrs. J.L. Parker of Norfolk; by nine grandchildren and a host of friends. Addie Etta (VAUGHAN; Mrs. William T.) Her father's name appears many ways, but her nephew's name was Hillary. Her mother's maiden name is thought to have been WILLS, but it possibly was WELLS- it is written both ways in the (recopied) Southampton Co. M.Reg. 1750-1853 (pp. 536, 723); they married 21 Mar 1844. Her brother James was the next-to-last surviving Confederate veteran in Southampton Co.
