C. Harcum, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Harcum of this community. The telegram was an official message from the Government bearing the sad news to his wife and parents that this Southampton boy had paid with his life his offering for Liberty over there, his death occurring on August 8. While their friends sympathize with them deeply, they feel at the same time that a glorious privilege is theirs to give their loved one in the great cause for which America fights today, and his honorable death will ever remain perpetuated in the annals of the county as our first to die in action for his country. He is also survived by his young wife, who is the daughter of Mr. Samuel Carr of Isle of Wight and a brother, William Emory Harcum, is now with the American Expeditionary Forces in France. The war is beginning to come home to us in Southampton, recent dispatches telling for the death by pneumonia in France on September 16, of Leonard Cobb Brittle, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Brittle of Ivor; the death by pneumonia on September 14 in France of Allen Drake of the Statesville community, and this week we publish the distressing news that Corporal G. Herbert Yates of Courtland has been missing since September 14. Besides these fatalities, Rev. and Mrs. J. L. McCutcheon of Franklin have been advised that their son, Captain Royal H. McCutcheon of the Medical Corps, was gassed on September 10, although he is improving now in a convalescent camp, and Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Jackson of this town were recently advised that their son, Corporal Edgar B. Jackson, had been slightly wounded in action, while there are probably other casualties which have not come to the attention of this paper.
