HARCUM PASSES AT AGE 79 TUESDAY W. T. Harcum, well-known Franklin community farmer, died at his home Tuesday afternoon following a linger illness. Mr. Harcum, was a life-long resident of the Franklin community, holding membership in Sycamore Baptist Church, which he served faithfully and well, being a former deacon and Sunday school teacher in the congregation. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Addie Vaughan Harcum; two daughters, Mrs. R.L. Boone of Portsmouth and Mrs. J.L. Parker of Norfolk, six sons, Elmo Harcum of Norfolk, H.H. Harcum, Otis Harcum of Virginia Beach, Rev. Fred Harcum of Wise, Otto O. Harcum, W. Emory Harcum and J.B. Harcum, all of Franklin; a sister, Mrs. Jas. P. Whitfield of Franklin and eight grandchildren. Services were conducted Thursday afternoon from Sycamore Church by the Pastor, Rev. Floyd P. Davis, in the presence of a large assemblage of friends. The choir sang "The Old Rugged Cross," and the first scripture lesson was read by Rev. W.H. Corbitt of Holland, Mr. Davis making a brief talk on Mr. Harcum’s life in the church and community, emphasizing his "devoted and sincere Christian friendship." Rev. R.C. Stephenson offered prayer, and Rev. L.F. Paulette of Smithfield, a former Sycamore Pastor, sang "Will the Circle be Unbroken", Rev. L.W. Meachum of the Virginia Beach Baptist Church read the second scripture selections, and Rev. R.H. Corbitt of Colosse offered the final prayer at the graveside in the churchyard cemetery where Mr. Harcum was laid to rest surrounded by a profusion of beautiful flowers. Active pallbearers were Ellis, Jesse and L. Dossie Harcum, Pat Cotton, J.L. Vaughan, Russell Cotton, S.W. Lankford, Jr., Rowland Vaughan and John W. Darden. Honorary bearers were members of Mr. Harcum’s class in Sycamore Sunday School and several friends of the family.
