Harte, well-known in this town and section, died Monday morning at the home of his son, Nelson Harte in Martinsville, Va., after an illness of several months. Mr. Harte, who was in his 64th year, was a native of Tennessee, a graduate of Richmond College and of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. His first regular pastorate was at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, which he served most acceptably from 1892 to 1898, and in the long history of that congregation it has probably never had a pastor more generally beloved than Mr. Harte. While there he married Miss Gertrude Evelyn Norfleet, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex W. Norfleet of this town, who survived him with one son, Nelson Harte, and two grandchildren. Following his Beaver Dam pastorate, Mr. Harte preached at Parksley on the Eastern Shore and in Petersburg, going from there to North Carolina where he preached successively at Hickory, Oxford and Monroe, retiring from active ministry at Monroe early last year on account of failing health. Mr. Harte was a man of unusual gifts in the ministry, possessing an unusually fine personality and having a host of friends everywhere he was known. He was much in demand as a preacher in evangelistic meeting, conducting a most successful meeting in Franklin a number of years ago, while one of his last services was at a meeting conducted for the Beaver Dam Church this summer. Funeral rites were conducted from the Franklin Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by several ministers including; Reverends Geo. T. Tunstall of High Point, N.C., W.B. Poe and Dr. R.R. McCulloch of Oxford, N.C., W.B. Denson of Beaver Dam, Dr. W.B. Edwards of Murfreesboro, Dr. Jno. T. Wayland of Monroe, N.C., Dr. J.P. McCabe of Martinsville, Va., E. Norfleet Gardner of Dunn, N.C., Dr. Sparks W. Melton and Rev. Mr. Keefe of Norfolk. Burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being: W.W. Winborne, Sr., and J. Goode Johnson of Beaver Dam, C.V. Mainer of Oxford, N.C., W.M. Rucker and J.J. Gardner of Petersburg, Joel Myers, H.H. Baucom and Joel Griffin of Monroe, N.C.
