  Suffolk, Va., Jan. 4. - (Special.) - The funeral services of Mrs. Josephine 
Howard, who died yesterday, took place to-day at Courtland, the county seat 
of Southampton.  Mrs. Howard, who was the owner of the Howard Hotel, was one 
of the best known ladies in her county, and, besides, was well known to the 
travelling public, among whom her congeniality had gained many friends.  She 
was the mother of Mr. Richard Howard, a large merchant at Newsom's, and also 
of the late Thomas M. Howard, who was clerk of the Circuit Court in 
Southampton.

Her parents, Richard J. & Caroline F. (POPE) DARDEN, are also buried there 
   (N-23). 

Her husband, Henry Shield HOWARD (1828-1869), had been Deputy Clerk.
